{"id":1519,"date":"2023-08-23T10:34:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T15:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agri-search.com\/?p=1519"},"modified":"2023-10-31T13:49:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T18:49:16","slug":"are-we-addicted-to-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agri-search.com\/are-we-addicted-to-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Are We Addicted to Stress?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Are We Addicted to Stress?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For many, pending deadlines and packed schedules are not overwhelming, but instead can be a driving force that pushes them toward greater productivity. \u00a0We have processes to streamline, goals to achieve, promotions to earn, debt to eliminate, exercise regimes to master, dreams to chase, and people to help and inspire. \u00a0The \u201cI work best under pressure\u201d mantra environment creates a Catch-22; we get frustrated with ongoing stress, but we perform at the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency when under the exact stress we try to escape.<\/p>\n<p>For some, busyness can be reassuring; a feeling of constant forward-motion and accomplishment is much preferred over being stagnant or empty. \u00a0That reassurance can come with an eventual price \u2013 stress, while beneficial in moderate amounts, is harmful in excessive amounts, as are most things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can We Become Addicted?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe present hysteria is not an obligatory or inevitable condition of life; it\u2019s something we\u2019ve chosen, if only by our acquiescence to it. \u00a0Heidi Hanna, author of \u201cStressaholic: 5 Steps to Transform Your Relationship with Stress,\u201d argues that multiple demands on our time and energy have created a neurochemical dependence on stress. \u00a0By activating the dopamine reward center in the brain that feeds us feel-good endorphins, stress can temporarily boost performance, explaining why some appear to get so much done when under extreme pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Just like a drug, the feelings of stress and preoccupation are extremely addictive. \u00a0The transition between being hyper-busy to more reasonable levels of activity may be a foreign feeling and withdrawal symptoms may come along with it. \u00a0When one becomes addicted to non-stop thinking, worrying, striving, efforting, achieving, straining and stressing, allowing oneself to be truly relaxed and simply breathe can be an adjustment. \u00a0It may even feel boring!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simplifying and Balancing<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are a self-diagnosed \u201cstress junkie\u201d, start by asking yourself a few simple questions to be sure your efforts support your true intentions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is it you really want to accomplish? \u00a0How does your busyness support your end goals?<\/li>\n<li>What are the most important elements of your life? \u00a0Your family? \u00a0Your health? \u00a0Your spirituality? \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How much time and focus are you dedicating each day to those elements?<\/li>\n<li>Do you control your day, your career, and your life \u2013 or do you find those things controlling you?<\/li>\n<li>What comfort do you find in being stressed? \u00a0Why is it uncomfortable to be relaxed or reflective?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Break the Addiction<\/strong><br \/>\nOne suggestion is to evaluate, and then trim away, all the non-essentials in your day. \u00a0What are you involved with out of obligation that could be less frequent or eliminated entirely? \u00a0How many social networking sites do you really need to update or check, and how often per day? \u00a0What professional responsibilities could be delegated to others, but stay on your plate because \u201cthey\u2019ve always been there\u201d? \u00a0Eliminating a few non-essential tasks or activities gives you the time and energy to invest in those things that are essential for your balance and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Make a list of all your current important projects that are not urgent, and then assign at least two one-hour slots a week to work on them. \u00a0If you don\u2019t begin to do some of the strategic work now, when will you? \u00a0Sometimes we get so busy with the minutiae that we neglect the forward-motion activity required for true progress or change. \u00a0Usually, the most important things in your life are not necessarily the most urgent. \u00a0They don\u2019t call you on the phone, put deadlines on your calendar, or knock incessantly at your door. \u00a0They are often quiet \u2013 in the background \u2013 easy to forget and neglect. \u00a0Schedule time for those important projects, and then schedule the nonessentials around them.<\/p>\n<p>Consider de-junking your office or living environment. \u00a0Get rid of physical items you don\u2019t need &#8211; from old magazines and newspapers, to clothes that don\u2019t fit, to toys and movies that the kids have outgrown. \u00a0When what you don\u2019t need is out of the way, it takes much less time and energy to find the things you do need.<\/p>\n<p>Add activities into your schedule that you enjoy and be fully present as you\u2019re doing them. \u00a0You may feel you don\u2019t have the time but consider how much extra energy and motivation you receive from pursuing hobbies and gratifications, and how that energy might help you with your regular responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, stop trying to be all things to all people! \u00a0It is okay to say \u201cno\u201d, or to set expectations as to when it is realistic for you to accomplish the task at hand. \u00a0In today\u2019s busy, demanding world, we will likely always have more to do than we can ever get done in a single day. \u00a0Find joy and fulfillment in small achievements, day by day, and one at a time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are We Addicted to Stress?
