{"id":1546,"date":"2023-10-05T14:52:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agri-search.com\/?p=1546"},"modified":"2023-10-05T14:52:06","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:52:06","slug":"the-road-to-perdition-is-paved-with-wrong-assumptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agri-search.com\/the-road-to-perdition-is-paved-with-wrong-assumptions\/","title":{"rendered":"The Road to Perdition is Paved with Wrong Assumptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many years ago, the National Safety Council discovered that most accidents do not occur out of ignorance \u2013 but rather from false assumptions.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI can read this text or book and keep my eyes on the road at the same time.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI can skip the safety goggles just this once.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat electric circuit can\u2019t be live.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly, wrong assumptions can be deadly \u2013 and those we make in our careers are no exception.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe company will promote me when I\u2019m ready.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf I lose my job, a recruiter will find me another one.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s no need to toot my own horn.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If truth be known, it\u2019s easy to make false assumptions about many things, and a complacent attitude at work can spill over into one\u2019s job search as well.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m sure I can dress casually for the interview.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf the visit goes well, there will be plenty of time to read up on the company later.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s best not to seem too eager.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Guess what? The interview panel all wore ties, the candidate\u2019s lack of knowledge about the company was considered appalling, and the lack of apparent interest became the nail in the coffin.<\/p>\n<p>When considering any kind of job change, one cannot find out too much information. \u00a0Employers and search professionals alike will award extra points for the candidate\u2019s initiative in this regard, and, nine times out of ten, the employer\u2019s website is the best single source of information concerning recent corporate news, financial performance, major product lines, principal locations, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Often, the kind of information found on the Web or in company literature may lead to additional questions, which can become good fodder for subsequent interviews, as in the following example: \u201cI read in your earnings release that you\u2019re planning to enter the Chinese market. \u00a0Since international sales has been one of my specialties, I\u2019m curious as to whether you plan to establish a direct sales operation there or rely on third-party agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some information, of course, has to come from the horse\u2019s mouth. \u00a0If an outside recruiter is conducting the search, direct your questions through that individual \u2013 who may know the answers already or will be able to obtain them efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the kinds of information \u2013 both published and unpublished \u2013 that every candidate ought to know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The employer<\/strong> \u2013 Products or services, financial performance, reputation, marketplace position(s), geographic scope, internal culture, competitors, recent news, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The job<\/strong> \u2013 Title, responsibilities, compensation structure, chain of command (upward and downward), budget and size of staff, reasons why position is open, major tasks and challenges facing the next incumbent, success factors, political and other risks, opportunities for promotion, relocation policy and other issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The interview process<\/strong> \u2013 Who (background of the interview participants), what (type of interview, likely areas of interest), when (starting time and probable duration), where (address, directions if needed, phone number of host) and wear (dress code for the interview).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The decision-making process<\/strong> \u2013 Number of candidates under consideration, types of candidates (internal \/ external), need for additional interviews or return visits, medical and \/ or psychological testing policies, other next steps, anticipated time to a final decision and \u201cWhen \/ how will I hear from you next?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether in your day-to-day job or searching for a new career opportunity, knowledge is power. \u00a0Conversely, lack of information can lead, as it says on the Blue Screen of Death, to fatal errors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many years ago, the National Safety Council discovered that most accidents do not occur out of ignorance \u2013 but rather from false assumptions.\u00a0 For example: \u201cI can read this text or book and keep my eyes on the road at the same time.\u201d \u201cI can skip the safety goggles just this once.\u201d \u201cThat electric circuit  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1546","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
