Around the holidays, we often take time to reflect on where we are in life.\u00a0 Our wheels often are spinning.\u00a0 Is our life balanced and heading in the right direction, or are we scattered and torn and not able to see much light at the end of the tunnel?\u00a0 For our lives to be successful overall we must address each \u201cspoke\u201d of the \u201cWheel of Life.\u201d\u00a0 Named by Zig Ziglar, the \u201cWheel of Life\u201d refers to the seven spokes that represent each area of our lives\u2026 career, family, financial, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you do nothing in an area or two, you will have an unbalanced life or a \u201cflat tire.\u201d *<\/p>\n

It is common for each of us to see two or three areas on the \u201cWheel\u201d that we are naturally very good at; however, there will also be two or three that we may go to extremes to avoid.\u00a0 To be successful in life, we need to be intentional about putting forth effort in every area of our lives.<\/p>\n

Before the new year starts, sit down and carefully and intentionally write down goals in each of the seven areas.\u00a0 If you are very social but hate the physical part of life, or love time with family but finances drive you crazy, you can\u2019t just skip the tough stuff.\u00a0 Discipline and balance are key!<\/p>\n

Establish goals that work; they are not dreams or wishes.\u00a0 Begin to take steps that can make your life come alive and your dreams come true.\u00a0 To do that, you must set goals that are<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Specific.\u00a0 <\/strong>They cannot be vague.<\/li>\n
  2. Measurable<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cI want to lose weight\u201d isn\u2019t good enough.\u00a0 \u201cI want to lose 30 pounds\u201d is a good start.\u00a0 Put it out there on your mirror.\u00a0 Track it.<\/li>\n
  3. Given a Time Limit<\/strong>.\u00a0 This will allow you to break goals down into bite-sized pieces.\u00a0 \u201cI want to lose 30 pounds in six months\u201d allows you to break it down to five pounds a month or about one pound per week.\u00a0 This will let you know that you are or are not in line to meet your goal.<\/li>\n
  4. Your Goals<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cMy doctor (or spouse) says I need to lose 30 pounds\u201d won\u2019t do it.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t own the goal that came from your dream, you won\u2019t have the fortitude to persevere when the going gets tough.\u00a0 And obstacles will come \u2013 chocolate, birthday cake, holidays, too tired to exercise, etc.\u00a0 Anyone who wins in life has to learn to push through and overcome obstacles\u2026lots of them.\u00a0 You must own it; you have to care about the end results.\u00a0 When you do, you will work hard all the way through to accomplish your goal.<\/li>\n
  5. In writing<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is where almost everyone falls short.\u00a0 It has been stated that 93% of people never write down their goals.\u00a0\u00a0 The result is almost no one wins.\u00a0 Winners dream big, have written goals, and develop the discipline to achieve them.\u00a0 It is almost impossible to attain a big goal without a well thought out, written goal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In Habakkuk 2:2, it says, \u201cWrite the vision and make it plain\u2026\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 Good advice then, great advice in today\u2019s complicated world.<\/p>\n

    Accountability is key<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you are married, sit down with your spouse and make goals individually as well as together.\u00a0 Encourage one another and hold each other accountable.\u00a0 If you are single, find a trusted friend, family member, or co-worker who will encourage you and hold you accountable to your progress.<\/p>\n
